Cloud Migration Services is a services offering that typically (but not always) follows the Cloud Migration Assessment, and provides businesses with the operational activities related to a cloud migration.

NJA’s Cloud Migrations Services provides education, analysis and guidance, in addition to migration services, for customers wishing to adopt cloud or hybrid-cloud services. This is a large subject area and would include cost/benefit analysis and guidance. This service covers Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Cross Cloud PaaS offerings such as Pivotal’s CloudFoundryTM. Cloud migrations are complicated and sometimes controversial in nature, however there are some lower hanging fruit that are easier to justify and receive buy-in.

Use Cases and Strategic Considerations

  • Managing a Microsoft Exchange server is difficult and supporting a 24×7 operation with large numbers of mailboxes can be unwieldy and troublesome. Wether the existing messaging environment is Exchange, Lotus Notes/Domino, Groupwise or other messaging service, migrating to Microsoft Office 365 can provide several benefits:
    • Elimination of the need to own, host and manage a Messaging infrastructure. The TCO for self management is often unknown or underestimated, aside from the physical Compute, Storage and Networking infrastructure, staffing requirements can be very costly, especially when operating in 24×7 environments.
    • Simplification in Enterprise User Licensing agreement (EULA) management. Most of the Microsoft Office desktop products are included in the Office 365 licensing, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Specialty software products like Microsoft Project or Visio are available on a per-user basis
    • Automatic software updates and patching, reducing the risk of being exposed by known software vulnerabilities
  • Document and Records management can be achieved in several ways, by migrating to Microsoft Office 365 and utilizing Microsoft SharePoint can provide many benefits including:
    • Microsoft SharePoint on-premesis requires product licensing, infrastructure and management. Migrating to Microsoft Office 365 provides access to the latest version of Microsoft SharePoint without additional cost.
    • Highly configurable to meet process and user experience requirements

    • Existing Document and Records management or document repository can be replaced without additional cost, resulting in savings for infrastructure, licensing and support
    • Access to several out-of-the-box templates to provide a customized user experience
    • The framework to custom develop sophisticated applications upon the existing SharePoint framework
  • Utilizing Microsoft Azure Active Directory in addition to or as a replacement for on-premises Active Directory
  • Utilizing an Object Storage solution such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) Simple Storage Solution (S3), can provide inexpensive short and long term storage, with built in life-cycle management to ensure less frequently access files are moved onto a lower tier of storage. Utilizing S3 can be a good way to interact and share large files with external entities such as business partners and customers
  • Utilizing cloud compute resources such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2), can provide inexpensive short and long term location to host web campaigns, without risking high volumes of traffic hitting corporate web servers
More strategic uses for cloud services and migrations, be they hybrid or full cloud implementations, will take significant analysis and design. The cost benefits can be compelling and the agility/ease of use can make the ROI appealing. Cloud capabilities together with geographically separated Regions and Availability Zones can provide significantly improved availability to applications, in addition to strongly defined Disaster Recover (DR) capabilities.
